The best smokeless fire pits use a double-wall design to burn off most of the smoke that drives guests to play musical chairs around a regular fire ring, which makes cool fall and winter evenings outside far more pleasant. No wood fire is truly smoke-free, but the right pit gets close once it is hot. We compared specs, expert testing and owner reviews to choose nine wood and pellet pits, from a tabletop s’mores burner to heavy-duty models built to live outdoors year-round.

1. Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0: Best Overall
The Bonfire 2.0 was named best overall by both Bob Vila and HGTV in their testing. Its stainless double wall gets hot quickly, HGTV saw smoke clear after about 10 minutes, and Bob Vila found almost no ash or coals left after a long burn. At about 19.5 inches across and 23 pounds, it fits four to six people and still moves easily between the patio and a camping trip.
Key specs
- Diameter: 19.5 inches
- Weight: about 23 lb
- Material: stainless steel, double wall
- Fuel: wood
- Includes: removable base plate and ash pan
- Warranty: lifetime
👍 Pros
|
👎 Cons
|
What owners say: Owners rave about the clean burn and how little ash is left. The most common complaint is how fast it eats firewood.
2. Solo Stove Ranger 2.0: Best Portable
The Ranger 2.0 shrinks the same double-wall design down to 15 inches and 15 pounds, so it is easy to toss in the car for camping or to use on a small patio. Solo Stove positions it for two to four people. If you mostly have small gatherings, it saves money and fuel compared with the Bonfire.
Key specs
- Diameter: 15 inches
- Weight: about 15 lb
- Material: stainless steel, double wall
- Fuel: wood
- Best for: 2-4 people
👍 Pros
|
👎 Cons
|
What owners say: Buyers like its portability for camping and small yards. Some wish they had sized up once friends started joining.
3. Solo Stove Yukon 2.0: Best for Large Groups
Outdoor Life named the 27-inch Yukon its best overall smokeless pit, and its tester’s unit still looked good with no rust after three years outdoors. It is sized for six or more people and burns full-size logs. At over 40 pounds, it is a stay-put backyard centerpiece rather than a camping pit. A cover, heat deflector and grill top are sold separately.
Key specs
- Diameter: 27 inches
- Weight: about 41.6 lb
- Material: stainless steel
- Fuel: wood
- Best for: 6+ people
👍 Pros
|
👎 Cons
|
What owners say: Owners praise how well it holds up outdoors and how much heat it puts out. Price and size are the usual reservations.
4. Breeo X Series 19: Best Permanent Pit
Breeo’s X Series is a heavy, heirloom-style pit that Outdoor Life named its best permanent option. It sits on built-in stainless legs, which Outdoor Life notes makes it suitable for wood decks, and it pairs with Breeo’s grill and griddle accessories for cooking over the fire. Choose corten steel, which weathers to a rust-colored patina by design, or pay more for stainless.
Key specs
- Outside diameter: about 22 inches
- Height: 14.75 inches
- Weight: 47 lb
- Material: corten or 304 stainless steel
- Fuel: wood (14-16 inch logs)
- Warranty: limited lifetime
👍 Pros
|
👎 Cons
|
What owners say: Owners love the solid construction and cooking options. Some buyers are surprised by the corten patina, and it is a two-person lift.
5. Breeo Y Series: Best Multi-Fuel Pit
The Y Series burns wood, pellets or charcoal and has adjustable legs that set it at 15 to 20 inches high. It was a runner-up at Bob Vila, HGTV’s best splurge and Outdoor Life’s best portable pick, and HGTV notes a built-in heat shield. It has no ash tray, so cleanup means scooping.
Key specs
- Diameter: 21 inches
- Weight: 31 lb
- Fuel: wood, pellets or charcoal
- Adjustable legs: 15-20 inches
👍 Pros
|
👎 Cons
|
What owners say: Owners like switching to pellets or charcoal for cooking. Ash cleanup is the main gripe.
6. TIKI Brand Patio Smokeless Fire Pit (25″): Best for Patios
HGTV named this TIKI model its best for patios, and Bob Vila picked it for design. It ships with a stand, removable ash pan, weather cover and a starter pack of TIKI’s light-the-bag wood pellets. The burn chamber is relatively small, so plan on refilling it more often than with a Solo Stove.
Key specs
- Size: about 24.75 x 24.75 x 18.75 inches
- Weight: 43 lb
- Fuel: firewood up to 16 inches or TIKI Wood Packs
- Includes: stand, ash pan, cover, starter wood pack
- Warranty: 2-year limited
👍 Pros
|
👎 Cons
|
What owners say: Buyers like the look and that it smokes little once it is going. Frequent refilling and a sometimes-sticky ash pan are the common complaints.
7. Pit Boss Smokeless Fire Pit: Best Pellet Fire Pit
Bob Vila named this Pit Boss its best pellet pit. Hardwood pellets are drier than most firewood, so smoke stays very low; in testing, a 40-pound bag lasted about two and a half hours and left about half the ash of a wood bundle. It comes with a fitted cover, a removable windshield and an ash pan.
Key specs
- Size: about 22.8 x 22.8 x 18.3 inches
- Weight: 34.4 lb
- Material: double-walled steel
- Fuel: hardwood pellets (wood chips or chunks also work)
- Includes: cover, windshield, ash pan
👍 Pros
|
👎 Cons
|
What owners say: Owners love the heat and how little smoke it makes. Getting the pellets lit takes some patience.
8. BioLite FirePit+: Best High-Tech Pick
The FirePit+ uses a battery-powered fan with 51 air jets to feed the fire, and you can adjust it from a Bluetooth app. Mesh sides give a clear view of the flames, and the fan battery can also charge your phone. HGTV, Bob Vila and Outdoor Life all singled it out, for smart features, tech and looks. Prices vary widely by retailer, so compare before buying.
Key specs
- Size: 27.5 x 12 x 16 inches
- Weight: 19.8 lb
- Fuel: wood or charcoal
- Fan: rechargeable, 4 speeds, up to 30 hours on low
- Includes: grill grate, fuel rack, USB cord
👍 Pros
|
👎 Cons
|
What owners say: Buyers enjoy the low smoke and the open view of the fire. Complaints include a noisy fan, a snug fuel basket and mesh that can discolor over time.
9. Solo Stove Mesa: Best Tabletop Fire Pit
The Mesa is a 5-inch tabletop fire pit that burns small wood pieces or pellets, and HGTV named it best tabletop and found it ideal for s’mores. It weighs under 1.5 pounds and comes with a stand and carry bag. It is a fun gift or table centerpiece, but it will not keep a group warm.
Key specs
- Diameter: about 5 inches
- Weight: 1.4 lb
- Fuel: small wood pieces or pellets
- Includes: stand and carry bag
👍 Pros
|
👎 Cons
|
What owners say: Owners call it a fun, novelty way to have a small fire on a table. It is not a heat source, and buyers expecting warmth are disappointed.

How to choose a smokeless fire pit
- Understand how they work. Air enters vents at the bottom, heats as it rises between the double walls, and exits through holes near the rim. That hot oxygen ignites unburned smoke particles, which is why you see jets of flame around the top. The better a pit reaches and holds that secondary burn, the less smoke you get.
- Expect low smoke, not zero smoke. Most smoke comes at startup and fades once the pit is hot, often within about 10 minutes. Wet or green wood will still smoke. Only propane fire pits are truly smoke-free.
- Size it to your group. As a rough guide from Bob Vila, 13-15 inch pits suit two to four people, 19-22 inch pits four to six, and 27-30 inch pits six or more. Bigger pits are heavier and less portable.
- Pick a fuel. Dry, kiln-dried hardwood gives the classic campfire. Pellets are low-moisture and easy to store but burn fast. Some pits also take charcoal for cooking. Match log length to the pit’s size.
- Choose the material. Stainless resists rust but discolors with heat. Corten steel weathers to a patina on purpose. Painted or alloy steel needs a cover.
- Protect your deck or patio. Keep pits well away from structures and overhangs; Bob Vila suggests at least 10 feet and TIKI says 15 feet for its pit. Never set a wood-burning pit directly on a wood deck without a stand, heat shield or fire-resistant mat, and follow the manufacturer’s clearance limits.
- Check local burn rules. Many towns restrict wood fires and issue seasonal burn bans. Look up your local ordinances before buying.
FAQ
Are smokeless fire pits really smokeless?
No. They produce much less smoke than an open fire ring once they are hot, but you will still see some smoke at startup or with damp wood.
Can you use a smokeless fire pit on a wood deck?
Only with the right setup. Use a stand or heat shield made for your pit, add a fire-resistant mat, keep clearance from railings and walls, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Some models are designed for masonry only.
What is the best wood for a smokeless fire pit?
Dry, seasoned or kiln-dried hardwood such as oak, hickory or maple burns hottest and cleanest. Avoid green wood, leaves and treated lumber.
How do you clean a smokeless fire pit?
Let the fire burn out on its own rather than dousing it with water, wait until the pit is completely cool, then empty the ash pan or scoop out the ash. Wipe the outside with a soft cloth and cover the pit when it is not in use.
