Only four minivans are sold in the U.S., and choosing the best minivan for your family comes down to a few questions: Do you need all-wheel drive? How much do you drive? How many car seats? We compared the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica and Kia Carnival on price, fuel economy, cargo space, third-row room, car seat anchors and crash-test results, using manufacturer, EPA, IIHS and NHTSA data.
Part of our Family Cars guides, where we answer the questions parents actually ask about seats, car seats and cargo.

The quick verdict
- Best overall and best for snow: Toyota Sienna. Hybrid-only with 36 mpg combined, available AWD, and IIHS’s top “Good+” car seat anchor rating. Cargo space is the smallest of the four.
- Most space for the money: Kia Carnival. The lowest starting price, the most cargo behind the third row (40.2 cu ft) and a 33 mpg hybrid option. No AWD.
- Easiest for car seat juggling: Honda Odyssey. Magic Slide second-row seats, lower anchors in five seating positions and a “Good+” anchor rating. V6 only, 22 mpg, no AWD.
- Most flexible interior: Chrysler Pacifica. Stow ‘n Go seats fold into the floor in both rear rows, and AWD is available. The plug-in hybrid is being discontinued.

The safety detail most parents miss
All four minivans earn 5-star overall ratings from NHTSA, but none earned a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick award. The reason matters for families: IIHS’s updated moderate overlap front test now measures how well a second-row passenger is protected, and minivans struggled. The Sienna, Pacifica and Carnival were rated Marginal in that test and the Odyssey was rated Poor.
What that means in practice: these are still well-built vehicles with strong scores elsewhere (all have Good small overlap results, for example), but rear-seat belt technology in minivans hasn’t caught up with the best new SUVs. Keep kids in the right car seat or booster for as long as they fit, since a properly used child seat adds protection a seat belt alone can’t.
Car seats: which minivan is easiest?
IIHS rates how easy each vehicle’s LATCH hardware is to use. The Sienna and Odyssey earn the top Good+ rating, meaning anchors are easy to find and use in enough seats for multiple car seats. The Pacifica and Carnival are rated Acceptable.
- Honda Odyssey: lower anchors in all second-row seats and both third-row outboard seats. Magic Slide seats shift sideways, so you can reach the third row without uninstalling a car seat.
- Toyota Sienna: up to 5 seats with car seat anchors, plus a Super Long Slide second row (about 25 inches of travel) on some trims. The second-row seats can’t be removed because they contain airbags.
- Kia Carnival: the most full anchor sets on paper, but an Acceptable ease-of-use rating. Top trims have VIP lounge seats with leg rests, which can’t be removed.
- Chrysler Pacifica: fewer full anchor sets than rivals. Stow ‘n Go is brilliant for cargo, but you’ll uninstall car seats to use it.
Whichever you choose, install your actual seats during the test drive. See our best convertible car seats and best infant car seats guides.

Fuel costs: what the mpg gap is worth
The hybrids save real money if you drive a lot. Here’s the simple math: annual gallons = miles per year รท mpg.
| Minivan | Combined mpg | Gallons per 12,000 miles |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Sienna (FWD) | 36 | About 333 |
| Kia Carnival Hybrid | 33 | About 364 |
| Honda Odyssey | 22 | About 545 |
| Chrysler Pacifica (FWD) | 22 | About 545 |
| Kia Carnival (V6) | 21 | About 571 |
That’s roughly 200 or more extra gallons a year for the V6 vans. Multiply by your local gas price to see the yearly difference.
Each minivan in detail
Toyota Sienna: best overall
The Sienna is the only minivan that’s hybrid-only, and it’s the only one besides the Pacifica with AWD, which matters in snowy states. Family touches include the Super Long Slide second row, an available built-in fridge box and vacuum. Trade-offs: the smallest maximum cargo space, a noisy engine when pushed, and second-row seats you can’t remove.
Kia Carnival: most space for the money
The Carnival starts lowest, has the most room behind the third row and offers a 33 mpg hybrid. Higher trims add dual 12.3-inch screens, up to 9 USB-C ports and heated and ventilated lounge seats. Kia’s warranty is the longest in the class. Trade-offs: no AWD, the smallest third-row legroom and thin third-row cushions.
Honda Odyssey: best for car seat families
Magic Slide seats, the CabinWatch camera that lets you see the kids on the screen (Touring and Elite) and a Good+ LATCH rating make the Odyssey the easiest daily car seat hauler. Trade-offs: V6 only with 22 mpg, no AWD or hybrid, and a Poor rating in IIHS’s updated moderate overlap test.
Chrysler Pacifica: most flexible interior
Only the Pacifica folds both rear rows into the floor (Stow ‘n Go), so it switches from people hauler to cargo van in minutes. The 2027 refresh adds a 360-degree camera system and a height-adjustable liftgate, and AWD is available. Trade-offs: the oldest design, 22 mpg, weaker resale value, and the plug-in hybrid version is being discontinued after 2026. Check open recalls on any Pacifica you consider.
Minivan vs three-row SUV vs Tesla Model Y L
Sliding doors, low floors and huge cargo areas make minivans the most practical family vehicles. A minivan has more than twice the space behind the third row of the six-seat Tesla Model Y L (14.8 cu ft), and adults fit in the third row more comfortably. Choose an SUV or EV if you need more ground clearance, towing, or simply prefer the driving feel, and accept less room behind the third row.

FAQ
What is the most reliable minivan?
We don’t publish our own reliability scores. Toyota and Honda have long reputations for durability, and the Pacifica has had several recalls in 2026, so check NHTSA’s recall lookup for any specific vehicle and read owner reviews before buying.
Which minivans have all-wheel drive?
Only the Toyota Sienna and the gas Chrysler Pacifica offer AWD. The Honda Odyssey and Kia Carnival are front-wheel drive only.
Which minivan fits the most car seats?
The Sienna, Odyssey and Carnival can each hold car seats in five positions; the Sienna and Odyssey have the easiest-to-use anchors according to IIHS. Seat shape and width matter too, so test your own seats.
Which minivan gets the best gas mileage?
The Toyota Sienna, at 36 mpg combined (FWD), followed by the Kia Carnival Hybrid at 33 mpg.
Is a minivan safer than an SUV?
Not automatically. All four minivans have 5-star NHTSA ratings, but none earned a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick, mainly due to rear-passenger protection in the updated front crash test. Compare specific models on iihs.org and nhtsa.gov.
