1. Counter Culture Coffee — Best overall

Brett Smith and Fred Houk started Counter Culture in Durham in 1995, and it has grown into one of the most influential specialty roasters in the country without leaving North Carolina. The company adopted a certified Direct Trade policy in 2008 and has published annual Transparency Reports since 2009, laying out what it pays producers.

Hologram is the coffee to start with. It’s a medium-roast blend of natural and washed coffees from Africa and Latin America that the roaster describes as fruity and syrupy with milk chocolate, and the current lot pairs a Guatemalan coffee with an Ethiopian one. Counter Culture ships throughout the US by UPS, roasts and ships on weekdays, and orders of $30 or more ship free.

Visit if you’re in town: the headquarters and roastery is at 812 Mallard Ave in Durham, and the company’s training centers in cities such as Atlanta and Miami host public classes.

Why we picked it: Nearly two decades of transparent sourcing, a low free-shipping minimum and a flagship blend that suits almost any brewer.

Keep in mind: Counter Culture is sold in many supermarkets, so it’s less of a hidden find, and grocery bags may be older than coffee shipped straight from the roaster.

What owners say: Buyers on the roaster’s own site rate Hologram highly, often praising its balance of chocolate and fruit as an everyday coffee.

2. Black & White Coffee Roasters — Best for adventurous single origins

Black & White comes with unusual credentials: co-founders Lem Butler and Kyle Ramage won the US Barista Championship in 2016 and 2017. In September 2017 the pair bought Back Alley Coffee Roasters in Wake Forest, rebranded it and began roasting on a 15-kilo Loring, according to Daily Coffee News. Its shop rates experimental single origins on a playful “funk” scale.

If you’d rather ease in, start with The Original, one of its year-round coffees. It’s a washed Ethiopian coffee from the Aricha area with notes of citrus, honey and chocolate and a tea-like body. The roaster labels it medium-dark but says it’s lighter than its other year-round offerings. Black & White roasts four days a week and ships free within the USA on orders over $40.

Visit if you’re in town: the Wake Forest café at 314 S Brooks St is the original shop, and there’s a downtown Raleigh café inside the Videri Chocolate Factory at 327 W Davie St.

Why we picked it: Competition-level expertise and a lineup that’s ideal for drinkers who want something they won’t find in the grocery aisle.

Keep in mind: Many of its single origins are limited releases that sell out quickly, and they cost more than the year-round coffees.

What owners say: We found few independent customer reviews, so the founders’ competition record and the roaster’s coverage in Sprudge and Daily Coffee News are the main quality signals.

3. Crema Coffee Roasters — Best light-to-medium roasts

Rachel and Ben Lehman self-funded Crema and opened its first café in Nashville’s Rutledge Hill neighborhood in January 2008, as Sprudge reported. Rachel is a licensed Q grader, and the company says it has placed in the top two of the Specialty Coffee Association’s roasting competition twice and that its zero-waste program keeps more than 90% of its waste out of landfill.

Tres Banderas, the flagship and best-selling blend, combines two Latin American coffees with one from Africa and carries notes of stone fruit, caramel and milk chocolate. Crema says all of its coffees fall in the light-to-medium range, so expect sweetness and clarity rather than smoky bitterness. Coffee is roasted within one business day of shipping, goes out by USPS Priority on weekdays, and orders of $50 or more ship free.

Visit if you’re in town: the downtown café at 15 Hermitage Ave is the original, with additional shops in East Nashville and Brentwood.

Why we picked it: Serious roasting credentials, a sustainability focus and a consistently light-to-medium style that shows off origin character.

Keep in mind: Its $50 free-shipping threshold is the highest in this guide, and it sits at the upper end of the $$ tier per ounce.

What owners say: Visitors give the cafés strong marks on Google, and some coffee fans online call Tres Banderas a standout for espresso.

4. Portrait Coffee — Best Atlanta roaster

Portrait is a Black-owned roaster founded in 2019 in Atlanta’s historic West End. Daily Coffee News, which covered its café opening in 2023, reported that the company roasts on Mill City machines and is led by John Onwuchekwa and Aaron Fender. Its signature roasts are named after cultural figures.

Start with TONI, named for Toni Morrison. It’s a medium-dark coffee with a rotating origin (a washed Honduran coffee when we checked) and notes of bittersweet cocoa, hazelnut and plum. Portrait sells bags online, and several of its coffees are also listed on Amazon through Bean Box.

Visit if you’re in town: the café at 1065 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd SW sits above the roastery in the Lottie Watkins Building.

Why we picked it: A distinctive, community-rooted Atlanta roaster with a chocolatey flagship that’s easy to love.

Keep in mind: Its standard bag is 310 grams (about 11 ounces) rather than 12 ounces, and the site lists two different free-shipping thresholds, so check at checkout.

What owners say: We found little independent customer feedback; local press coverage and its growth to two roasting machines are the clearest quality signals.

5. Panther Coffee — Best Miami espresso blend

Leticia and Joel Pollock opened Panther in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood in 2010. It lists multiple Good Food Awards and other recognition on its site, and in 2020 it added a second roastery in Traverse City, Michigan.

The 1927 Panther Coffee Blend is inspired by Northern Italian espresso, and the roaster describes it as dark chocolate and nutty with a syrupy, creamy body and a mellow, balanced cup. Panther’s online shop advertises free shipping on orders over $50, and the 1927 blend and other coffees are also sold on Amazon.

Visit if you’re in town: the original Wynwood café at 2390 NW 2nd Ave opened in 2010, with other Miami shops in Coconut Grove, MiMo and Little Haiti.

Why we picked it: The roaster that helped put Miami on the specialty-coffee map, with an espresso blend designed for crowd-pleasing lattes.

Keep in mind: Panther doesn’t list a roast level for 1927, and we couldn’t load its full shipping policy, so review delivery details before you order direct.

What owners say: We found little independent customer feedback beyond its press coverage and awards, so its long track record is the main signal.

6. Per'La Specialty Roasters — Best roast-to-order espresso

Chris Nolte and Paul Massard, a Q grader, founded Per’La in Miami in 2015. Daily Coffee News reported that it started roasting to order on a 15-kilo Loring Falcon, and the company won a Good Food Award in 2018.

Espresso Fino is the bag to try first. It’s a dark-roast blend of Guatemalan, Brazilian and Sumatran coffees with notes of dark chocolate, roasted nuts and raspberry. Coffee Review scored it 92 in 2021, and the roaster’s site notes a 2026 Global Coffee Awards bronze in the espresso-blend category. Per’La ships domestic orders by USPS Ground Advantage on the same or next business day, and its site banner advertises free shipping over $40.

Visit if you’re in town: there’s no café, but the roastery at 4657 SW 71st Ave in Miami is open on weekday mornings by appointment.

Why we picked it: Roast-to-order freshness and a well-reviewed espresso blend from a small, quality-focused team.

Keep in mind: Several coffees were sold out when we checked, and there’s no café to drop into.

What owners say: Shoppers who leave reviews on Per’La’s own site are overwhelmingly positive, though the number of reviews is small.

7. Kahwa Coffee — Best value

Raphael and Sarah Perrier founded Kahwa in St. Petersburg in 2006 and opened their first café two years later. Kahwa now describes itself as Florida’s largest independent roaster, with more than 20 cafés and over 1,000 wholesale accounts.

Sirocco is Kahwa’s signature house blend and the coffee served in its cafés. It’s a medium-dark blend of Central and South American coffees with notes of dark cherry and honey and a smooth finish, which makes it an easy daily drinker for drip and French press. Kahwa roasts to order, ships to all 50 states from St. Pete, and offers free shipping on orders over $45.

Visit if you’re in town: two downtown St. Petersburg cafés, at 475 2nd St N and 204 2nd Ave S, are a short walk from the waterfront.

Why we picked it: A large, established Florida roaster with clear shipping terms and a lower price per ounce than the rest of this list.

Keep in mind: The lineup leans toward blends and darker roasts, and Sirocco showed as sold out on Kahwa’s own site when we checked, though it’s also sold on Amazon.

What owners say: We found little independent review data; its long run of local awards and steady café growth are the main signals.

8. Methodical Coffee — Best Carolina café blend

Marco Suarez, David Baker and Will Shurtz opened Methodical’s first café in downtown Greenville in February 2015 and began roasting in-house the following year on a Diedrich IR-12, according to Daily Coffee News. Imbibe named it Coffee Bar of the Year in 2017.

Blue Boy, one of its best-selling blends, tastes of chocolate, graham cracker and brown sugar. Methodical rates it as a “contemporary” style on its own roast scale rather than naming a roast level, but the notes point to a sweet, approachable cup that’s good in drip brewers and with milk. The roaster ships only within the US, roasts and ships Monday through Thursday, and offers free shipping on orders over $40.

Visit if you’re in town: Methodical Downtown at 101 N Main St sits in the heart of Greenville’s walkable Main Street.

Why we picked it: An award-winning café team with a friendly, dessert-like house blend and clear shipping rules.

Keep in mind: It doesn’t ship Friday through Sunday, so weekend orders wait until Monday.

What owners say: Independent customer reviews are sparse; the Imbibe award and trade-press coverage are the strongest quality signals.

How to choose a Southeast coffee roaster

Match the roast style to your taste. The Southeast covers a wide range. Crema stays in the light-to-medium zone, and Black & White’s single origins can be bright and fruity. Counter Culture’s Hologram and Methodical’s Blue Boy sit in the sweet, balanced middle. Portrait’s TONI, Kahwa’s Sirocco and Per’La’s Espresso Fino lean darker and more chocolatey, which suits espresso and milk drinks.

Look for a roast date, not just a best-by date. Coffee tastes best in the weeks after roasting. America’s Test Kitchen notes that flavor fades after about two to three weeks, so check for a “roasted on” date.

Plan around roast and ship days. Smaller roasters often roast on set weekdays. Black & White roasts four days a week, Methodical ships Monday through Thursday, and Counter Culture roasts and ships on weekdays.

Grind for your brewer. Buy whole beans and grind just before brewing. Use a fine grind for espresso, medium-fine for pour-over, medium for drip machines and coarse for French press and cold brew. If you don’t own a burr grinder yet, see our coffee grinder guide.

Store beans properly. The National Coffee Association recommends buying about one to two weeks’ worth at a time and keeping beans in an airtight, opaque container somewhere cool and dark. If you freeze extra beans, use a truly airtight container and avoid repeated thawing.
